From late November European cities turn into a film set: market huts, garlands over the streets, the smell of mulled wine and crowds who want to keep the moment. Christmas markets are one of the most photographed seasons in Europe — and now is the time to book a December shoot. Here's how to capture a holiday story that feels alive rather than staged.

The trend of the season: less perfect, more real

The big photography trend of 2026 is a move away from sterile images toward honest, living frames: real emotion, movement, a little grain, imperfect light. A Christmas market is ideal for it — steam from hot chocolate, laughter, lights turning into bokeh. I don't ask you to freeze by the tree; I guide you through a walk: you taste treats, pick an ornament, warm your hands — and I catch the moments.

When to shoot

The best slot is blue hour: in December that's roughly 4–5 pm, when the sky is still deep and the illuminations are already on. Weekdays are calmer than weekends; the busiest dates are the last weekends before Christmas. For a crowd-free frame we start in daylight and finish with the first lights.

Belgrade

The centre gathers the holiday around Republic Square and Knez Mihailova: lights over the pedestrian street, shop windows, festive bazaars. For intimate frames we head to Skadarlija — the cobbled, lantern-lit street is especially cosy in winter. More spots in the Belgrade locations guide.

Madrid

The Christmas market in Plaza Mayor is a classic of wooden stalls and ornaments, usually open from late November to the end of December. Nearby are the lights of Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol, among the most festive in Europe. Route and timing in the Madrid guide.

Paris

Holiday Paris means the lights of the Champs-Élysées, the Galeries Lafayette dome with its giant tree, decorated shop windows and seasonal markets on the squares. The Seine embankments and Pont Alexandre III at blue hour give the most cinematic frame. More in the Paris locations guide.

What to wear

A coat or a voluminous jacket, a scarf, gloves — winter clothing works beautifully in frame on its own. Choose solid colours and texture: wool, chunky knit, leather. For couples and families, one palette without matching sweaters. More in the what to wear guide, and holiday formats in the Christmas & New Year photoshoot article.

How to book

December evenings book out first — send your date and city, and we'll build a route around the lights and blue hour; I take the whole process on myself. I shoot in Belgrade, Madrid and Paris; prices are on the pricing page. A gift certificate for a shoot is one of the favourite holiday presents.
