Belgrade is photogenic in its own way: an old fortress above the meeting of two rivers, cobbled bohemian streets, Austro-Hungarian Zemun and the raw concrete texture of Savamala — all within a short route. Below are ten places I actually use on shoots, with honest notes on light, timing and crowds. If you're planning a shoot in Belgrade, take this as your starting map.
First, about timing
In summer the Belgrade sun stays harsh until evening, so I schedule portraits, love story and lookbooks for the first hour after sunrise or the golden and blue hour before sunset. By the water — Kalemegdan and the Sava and Danube quays — sunset is especially good, and there are fewer tourists. Plan for roughly 7–9 am and 7:30–9 pm.
The 10 locations
1. Kalemegdan & Belgrade Fortress
The city's signature spot: fortress walls and parkland above the confluence of the Sava and Danube, the Victor monument, old gates and cannons. The best frame is at sunset over the rivers. Downside: it's busy in the evening, so arrive early and move to the side bastions.
2. Skadarlija
A cobbled bohemian street with lanterns, ivy and old facades — the most romantic spot in the centre. Empty in the morning, with soft light between the buildings. Perfect for love story and warm, atmospheric portraits.
3. Zemun & Gardoš Tower
A former Austro-Hungarian town with tiled roofs and narrow lanes. Gardoš hill (the Millennium Tower) opens a panorama over the Danube, and below there's a cosy quay with boats. Lots of texture for lifestyle and couples.
4. Kosančićev Venac
An old cobbled quarter by St Michael's Cathedral: setts, tiled roofs, a view over the Sava. Quiet, atmospheric and almost tourist-free — a great intimate spot two minutes from Kalemegdan.
5. Savamala
A district of street art and industrial texture: brick, concrete, graffiti, old warehouses. I bring bolder fashion and brand shoots here, when you need a graphic, un-postcard backdrop.
6. Dorćol
Quiet old streets, calm facades, cafés and greenery. An understated urban backdrop for relaxed lifestyle portraits when you don't need the drama of landmarks.
7. Knez Mihailova
The main pedestrian street with 19th-century facades and shop windows. Shoot it at dawn while it's empty: long perspectives and clean architecture without the crowd.
8. Church of Saint Sava
A vast white marble church — one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world — monumental outside and with golden mosaics inside. Check shooting rules on site for the interior; outside, the plaza gives scale and symmetry.
9. Sava riverfront & Beton Hala
A modern river front: water, reflections, bridges and glass volumes. Best at blue hour when the lighting comes on. Great for clean urban portraits and brands.
10. Ada Ciganlija
A lake and green peninsula within the city: beach, forest, water. In summer, for easy natural portraits away from the centre, with air and nature in frame.
Permits and practicalities
Handheld shooting with natural light on Belgrade's streets and in its parks is free. For client sessions I keep gear minimal and mobile — that way we skip the formalities and cover 2–3 locations per shoot.
What to wear
